2011 Thirst Relief Mentor Auction! Let’s save some lives!

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Last year Joe and I took our first trip ever to WPPI.  We signed up for some meet ups with photographers, a couple shoots, etc.  As soon as I found out about the Thirst Relief Mentor Auction I started reading on every photographer listed, watching the auction, and bidding.  I bid on alot of auctions, I think Joe was VERY nervous for a while there, haha!  I set a budget for myself and in the last seconds lost out on an auction I wanted badly.  It didn’t matter, I believed in Thirst Relief.  I believed in the work they were doing and I wanted to help.  Even though I didn’t win I still donated that money to Thirst Relief.  A couple days later the mentor I had been bidding on found out I had been bidding on him and asked if I was willing to give a little more to Thirst Relief he would give me a mentor session.  I said HECK YES!

This mentor session forever changed me, forever changed my business.  I’m forever grateful.  And this year, it’s my turn to give back! YUP!

So first if you don’t know what Thirst Relief is GO CHECK IT OUT!!! Jim Davis-Hicks and his wife are great people who have started an amazing organization that saves lives! Or here, let me help you ;)

Thirst Relief Short from Anton Lorimer on Vimeo.

I am so excited to be a part of the mentor auction this year with MANY other AMAZING photographers!  I have always had the desire to give back and help out other photographers and I can’t wait to find out who I get to spend time with!! Each mentor is offering a 90 minute session along with anything else they’d like to give.  I’ll be offering 1 year of free Showit, PASS software, 1 year subscription to the upcoming photography and design magazine Smidgen, and a photo session with me! YAY!!!
Go check out the auction!

Family Photos – Before & After

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

Since family photo mini-sessions are happening this weekend and in December I thought it might be fun to show a family before and after.  This is one of my favorites from last year.  Just a classic, cute, simple family photo :)   When I looked up the stats for this photo I was shaking my head at my stats, haha.  We had just been inside so that is probably why my ISO is so high.  No need for it outside and with a shutter speed that high. But I had only been in business for just over 3 months and although I would do it a little bit different now, it turned out fine and I still love it! :)

There are still some openings for family sessions this Saturday and on December 3rd.  Contact me if you are interested. $40 from your session will go to the Cash Hyde Foundation!

Happy Wednesday!

Location, location, location!

Friday, September 30th, 2011

Recently I was asked, “Where do you go for most of your photoshoots? I’m tired of going to this park all the time.”  I thought,  ’this is a good topic to discuss on the blog!’  When a client and I start talking about their session or event I ask generic questions about location.  Such as if they want urban, forest, field, a mix, etc.  Then I literally say “Awesome!! I’m gonna scope out some new locations for that in the next couple days and we’ll talk more about that soon!”  First of all, this makes them feel special.  Like this place is just for them.  Second, then I’m not going to the same park over and over and over :)

How do I find these locations?  Every week I take a drive, or a walk, and just go scope out new areas. Literally drive to no where. Stop.  Walk. Look around.  Often I take my camera and photograph that spot.  Sometimes I come across something amazing that doesn’t fit maybe a specific session I’m looking for but it’s definitely up for grabs the next time around.

When?  When do I have the time to do this?!  This is where most have told me they get hung up.  Time, this takes time and they have other work and family.  I hear ya, trust me!  Some weeks I’ve had a bit of a rough week and I really just need an hour to myself, to think, let loose, reflect, whatever.  My husband usually can tell when I am in need of that and says GO!  So I go get a coffee and I drive.  Just think, look, experience that location a bit. Other weeks I don’t have the opportunity to go off for an hour on my own.  My husband has a full-time job, part-time job and goes to school full-time so most often I don’t have a chance to leave on my own.  So my daughter, Cattie, goes with me! Honestly I love this time with her.  We just get away from the house for a while.  Of course we get coffee.  By we I mean me, and she gets and apple cider which comes in a tiny Starbucks cup and she thinks it’s coffee ;)  We drive.  We stop.  We get out.  We walk.  There have been many times she says “Let’s stop here!” In my mind I’m like no, there is nothing here we aren’t stopping.  But I’ve learned to just listen.  We will stop and walk.  May only be a few blocks, but we come around a corner and there is an amazing little grassy area with an awesome tree, or the best photo alley I’ve ever seen, etc.  And the benefit of having her with me, is that I go out in the evening around when I usually have sessions and I take a photo of her there just to test it out!

Finding new locations is SO much fun.  It makes that session, that experience, so unique.  I encourage you to just venture out.  Breathe in the locations.  You’ll be amazed how inspiring they can be!

And, yes, last night we scoped out some locations.  This time Strawberry Shortcake came along :)

When a human being can be creative….

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

I’ve spent alot of time lately talking with others about fear.  About my own accounts of fear, as well as theirs and how we can overcome it. To me a fear is simply the lies I tell myself.  I let fear stand in my way and hold me back on my dreams because “it may not happen,” “it can’t happen,” “I will fail,” the list goes on.  But in reality I haven’t done anything yet to pursue this dream, or made this approach so I have NO IDEA if it may or may not happen, if it can or cannot happen, if I’m going to fail or succeed.  I simply don’t know, but I let fear tell me so.

How often have I let fear stand in my way through out my life? WAY too often, that’s the real answer.  I recently held back on a dream because fear told me I could never do that.  Well I pulled myself together and realized fear only has a hold on me as long as I LET it.  Keyword, LET.  I also realized at that same moment that I wasn’t just letting fear hold me back.  I was just letting dreams be dreams.  And now was the time to take steps in the directions of my dreams, make them goals and make them realities! I will talk more on that in a few weeks as I’m currently pursuing one of my dreams.

So a few months ago I saw a trailer to The Art of Flight.  This trailer to be exact :)

I’m a snowboarder and seeing this trailer it immediately became a MUST see.  So yesterday I downloaded it on iTunes and finally watched it.  I LOVE this movie and EVERYTHING that it is about.  Not only is this movie about the ridiculous talent of these riders, but it’s about pushing the limits.  Learning who you really can be. The movie opens with this quote from Travis Rice:

“Ya know it’s funny, what’s happening to us. Our lives have become digital. Our friends, now virtual. And, anything you could ever wanna know is just a click away. Experiencing the world through second hand information isn’t enough. If we want authenticity we have to initiate it. We will never know our full potential unless we push ourselves to find it. It’s this self-discovery that inevitably takes us to the wildest places on earth.”

I use social media, email, the internet, etc to promote my busines and connect with others.  But I realize sometimes I get caught up in the things everyone else is doing to pursue their dreams and wish it was me, rather than experiencing my own dreams first hand.  Do you do this too?

“We will never know our full potential unless we push ourselves to find it.”

Just think about it.  That line right there is SO powerful!

Later on Nicolas Muller says ” When a human being can be creative it’s, it’s when really anything is possible.”

Today, I encourage you to make your dreams a goal, pursue them, push yourselves further than you ever have before. Because, we really ARE capable of anything.  Anything IS possible! Don’t hold yourself back from something great.

:D

Before & After – Backyard Wedding

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

Yay! I kinda love before & afters.  They are just fun.  I’m currently working on a project to take place in a couple weeks and will have some off-the-chain before and afters so I will most definitely be sharing those!  When I get THE shot I LOVE showing my clients.  This was from my last wedding this summer and I immediately showed them this image and they were SO excited.  I love showing clients images as we go, they get excited, more comfortable and we’re amped to keep shooting.  Sooooo here is the before that the clients saw right away and the after is the image they received after a touch of editing :)

We’re Unique. We’re United. & We’re Free.

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

A few weeks ago I received an email from the “guys” at Showit.  If you’re a photographer and not familiar with Showit go check them out!!! Showit provides me with an awesome website, community and MUCH MUCH more!  So I received this email that says, can you please meet us in Santa Barbara on this day at this time?  “You don’t want to miss this, seriously!”  I thought…well…. I don’t want to miss this!!! So I said yes!  For the next couple weeks all I knew was that I needed to be there by 5pm on Monday, we were going out to a ranch, and who else was coming along.

What I recognized of the people coming were that this was a group of leaders.  Leaders that were always giving of themselves.  Always helping others.  They were the first Sherpas for Showit’s local SHARE groups around the country.  These were the people that stepped up and volunteered immediately as Showit announced the idea of SHARE, to lead these groups of Showit users within their local area.  I was excited to be apart of a group of amazing photographers and designers that were always always willing to help, those that wanted to make a difference in our industry. This was going to be an adventure.  And, because I knew nothing that was going to happen I had no expectations.  But I will say that it surpassed anything I could have even hoped for!

Some of us arrived early ate, had coffee, and SHOPPED ;) Oh and rode the “trolley” down State St. in Santa Barbara.  Santa Barbara is definitely somewhere I plan to go again, and again, and again.

After everyone came into town we all met up at The Freedom House (David Jay’s home).  The view….. incredible!!!!  We had some dinner, and just enjoyed each others company.  We still had no idea what was going to happen or if anything was SUPPOSED to happen.  We just enjoyed time together.

After dark they drove us about an hour north to the ranch.  It was dark and we had no idea where we were going.  None of the cabins had electricity so we ran around with our little flashlights picking our beds and building a fire.  We were given a little schedule.  All it said was the next morning we were going to a winery so be ready by this time, lets meet after dinner and lets meet after breakfast the last day.  I later came to find out that we didn’t know what was happening, because the Showit crew didn’t know what would happen.  They just had high hopes of bringing together this group, that something great would come of it.  I’d like to think that we may have surprised them and that this ended better than they ever could have dreamed.

So, the next morning we had some americanos, some breakfast and all showered in the best outdoor shower EVER!! I think we all wanted to take it home!  Then we were off to Sunstone Winery for a tasting and lunch.  We still just continued to enjoy each others company and hang out.  It was simple, it was beautiful.

After lunch we had a little thing where we went around and it was supposed to be my name is, I’m from, this is how I got here, and the first showiteer I met was….. But it became more.  More about us, who in that room inspired us, what Showit has done for us, and SOOO much more.

We then returned to the ranch and simply just spent time together.  Nothing was forced, nothing was set-in-stone-must-do.  We simply just bonded and built lasting relationships.  Then made smores with the most jumbo marshmallows known to man.  Oh you know chubby bunny happened, and David won with 3…. yup that’s how big they were.  Then we had a “meeting” talked about our dreams, as children what we wanted to be when we grew up, why we’re photographers and doing what we’re doing, etc.

Days were going by so fast and the next thing we knew it was the next morning.  All of us dragging ourselves in for Americanos (except those that surprisingly ended up being morning folk and skipped right in, I was not one!), more showers outside and breakfast by Jenny.  Jenny is da bomb!!!  This girl does everything.  Without her this trip would have been CRAZY and we probably would have starved to death. haha.  Because we LOVE her so much we surprised her with some flowers later that day, that we picked up at the farmers market in a little Danish town :)

Anyways, back to that morning :)   We got together after breakfast for another “meeting.”  Although this meeting wasn’t about where we went to college, how we got to where we were and why in the end we’re photographers and designers instead of teachers and astronauts.  This meeting I think surprised us all. It started with Kevin talking about some things they are planning on for WPPI and they wanted our advice on how to make it better for everyone.  What could they do to make it AMAZING?  We did eventually talk about WPPI but what happened next was an overflowing of ideas as a group that could possibly change our industry.  It was this meeting that made me realize why it was THIS group that was there, why THIS was happening.  We held similar ideals, had similar goals, had similar desires, similar needs, similar wants, this group was in complete unison on what we could do for others.  It wasn’t even about us it was about what we could do for OTHERS.  I truely think that we not only amazed ourselves, but that DJ, Andrew and Kevin were amazed.  Just a meeting with no expectations that ended up blowing our minds.  When it ended, we had formed a brotherhood.  Our hearts were full.  I can’t wait to see us, as a group, start to implement these ideas and help others, and make a difference in our work and this industry.

In the middle of this conversation Jasmine & JD surprised us.  They came in, sat down, listened, and gave input.  I will talk your ear off, for real.  As a child my dad called me yak attack.  When I was 5 I realized yak was an animal… I wasn’t so fond of it after that.  That is besides the point.  The point is, when someone I admire, look up to, someone who inspires me day-in-and-day-out comes in the room, I shut it.  I immediately sit back and watch and listen.  Honestly I didn’t realize I did this until after this day.  I think even if I had had a list of questions I possibly could ask Jasmine I still would have just watched her and listened.  In the midst of a funny story and laughing she said something that hit me.  It’s been sitting with since then and it’s changing me and about to change my business in such a great way!! I’m excited for the new adventure ahead of me.  She helped me realize this, she doesn’t know it yet, but she will!  Also I’m still insisting that JD teach my husband how to dress…. cause f’real, he has pretty darn good style, and Jasmine insists she doesn’t dress him!

This photo kinda looks like we both could have used a nap… maybe we could have!  We chose to laugh all night instead!

I have to tell you moments after this Jasmine asked if Lauren would take a photo of her and JD.  Lauren was like OH OF COURSE!!! Inside nervous as heck.  Jasmine leans down and grabs her purse and under a wallet, notebook, and many other things a woman carries in her purse she pulls out her camera.  We all felt a little relieved that not only do we sometimes just put our cameras in our purse, Jasmine Star does too :)

This was our last night there and there is no better way to end an amazing day than with a dance party.  And smores. Of course.

I think most of us just enjoyed time together and realized the next morning that we needed more photos!!!! As in, we really NEEDED.  So the clicking began!

These girls have become like sisters! Adore them.

A little bit of this was going on in the end.

This girl, I love her, and I REALLY love her style!  And she’s from Chicago!!! I know I know I’m a serious Canucks fan and I made a friend from Chicago! It’s so exciting! I plan to find myself there soon, to visit!

I met Karen in person, 7 months ago, and we’ve stayed in touch but over the few days in California our friendship has grown tremendously.  We even write each other songs now ;)

And then we realized this week was ending….

Some people have asked what happened in California, what was going on?  This is simply what happened. What made it so amazing was not that we met in California, cabined together or had dance parties.  It was the bond that formed over that time.  Either DJ, Todd and the crew knew exactly what they were doing by bringing this group together, OR God had a much bigger plan for us than we even knew.  This was meant to happen, there was purpose in the relationships built and the ideas brought forth.  We are unique, united & free.  I can’t imagine continuing life without these people in it. I’m excited to continue pursuing the ideas we discussed.  I believe as Showiteers (the whole group) we can collectively, make a change within our industry.  And I’m inspired to build relationships with others outside of the internet.  Some of us there had skyped before or heytelled, but the relationships that formed when we were together in person are undeniably amazing! Thank you DJ, Todd, Kevin, Brett, Jenny, Andrew, Kimmy, Jasmine, JD, Josh, Trevor, Karen, Isaac, Lauren, Joy, Stacey, Emma, Jenna, Sarah, Krisd, Lindsay, Shannon, David, Keith, and Julie for accepting me, loving me, supporting me, and inspiring me beyond my wildest dreams.  I love you all!

Wedding Before & After | Montana Wedding Photographer

Friday, August 5th, 2011

So I’m a little behind on blogging.  This last week and a half has been CA-RAY-ZAY!  We did alot of moving, my 3 year old came home from a month long vacation with grandparents, and a cousin gave us a scare like no other.  Aside from all of that the last couple days have been catch up days.  Getting there, slowly but surely.  But I didn’t want to just leave the blog hanging so thought I’d do a little before and after post :)   I might start to make these kind of regular.  I think they’re fun.  And thus far there has been lots of feedback on them, especially from other photographers :)

So before I run off to a wedding in Big Timber this weekend I’ll share this before and after from a wedding a few weeks ago.  It happens to be one of my favs and I’m sure I might just have to order it on a canvas ;)

Have a great weekend!!!

What do your images REALLY look like? – Editing

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

Lately I have been spending a lot of time talking with many other photographers and being asked how I edit my images.  SO, I thought this could be a fun blog post so you can get a somewhat behind the scenes look at what your images look like coming out of my camera and how I edit them along with the final product.

There is this misconception out there that editing can fix any image and or make the image.  As in it doesn’t really matter what it looks like in-camera cause I can fix that later.  Now if you are a master at photoshop you probably could do a pretty decent job of fixing anything.  But in reality as photographers our job is to take great images, period.  Editing is simply a way of enhancing our images.  I’m a huge advocate for getting an image as close to perfect in-camera.  This way I spend ALOT less time at the computer editing images day-in and day-out.  My personal style is to keep it simple, so I spend very little time editing.  So let’s get to it!!! I’ve also included some tech specs under each set of images for photographers reading to see what my settings were at for that photo.  Each one of these photos has been edited in Lightroom3 and in Photoshop.  I use a few different action sets and the names of the actions are abbreviated under the images as FO (Formula One), KB (Kubota), LCA (Life. Camera. Actions.) and BD (Boudoir Divas action set). So I chose an image to share from my last 4 sessions/events.  Here we go, I’m layin it all out there!

This first image is a little sneak peek at a wedding that I had the opportunity to second shoot for the lovely Rachel Lynn Photography up in Whitefish, MT. This image was taken later in the evening with a cloud covered sky, which is great! It provided a giant softbox of light for us. More of this wedding to come soon :)  Basically this image I just wanted to give it a pop which the Magic Marker action is awesome at (it’s one of my favs).  The action gives a little warmth, brightness, a little contrast and a little sharpen all at once!

Now this next photo has the most editing of all of the images.  I tend to get a little more nitty gritty with my editing for children.  But not only that, this session we walked into the shade and I took a shot to test my white balance and such but was way off!  I LOVE this image.  If I could go back and get this exact image again I’d up  my Kelvin on my white balance, and turned down my ISO.  There was no reason to be at 400 I could have easily done this at 160 or 200.  That aside while editing I mostly worked on warming this image up and then I slightly softened his cheeks (we love these photos of kids with their soft faces) and sharpened up his eyes and eyelashes.  I love baby eyelashes so I always take a small brush in photoshop and sharpen them up a bit to just give their eyes a little pop. :)

A couple weeks ago I did 2 engagement sessions.  This one was done just before a thunderstorm.  We had super dark clouds rolling over.  Not much is done to this image.  A slight crop, that Magic Marker again (mmmm) and pretty much voila!  One other thing, this image has a natural vignette.  I’m not a big lover of the vignette, natural is alright, but this one was too dark for me so I dodged (basically brightened) the edges a bit.

And this is the last image.  This photo was taken mid-afternoon in open shade.  Open shade is pretty much the edge of the shade where they aren’t into the dark shade, nor out in direct sunlight.  This location was even better because right in front of them is this cement parking lot, which acted like a reflector :)  Basically the sun hit that cement and reflected back up onto them giving great lighting.  Barely anything was done to these images.  Her left inside eye was where I focused but that put her right eye and his eyes on a plane in front of her left eye so they weren’t as sharp.  So I did sharpen her right eye and his to make them look well a bit sharper :)

I can tell you when I started my in-camera images looked NOTHING like this. Each time I go out I’m trying to perfect them more and more in-camera so I have less work to do later.  I love the results so much more when I’m not sitting editing for time on end to get them right.  I spend less than a minute editing each of these images.  Try it!  And clients (or potential clients) I hope you enjoyed seeing a little bit of what your images look like prior to edit :)  It’s kind of fun.  And in the weeks and months to come I’ll be doing more fun blog posts like this one :) Have a great weekend!!!

DVD’s… BYE BYE!!!!!

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

YES! I’m so excited to share this!  And ya you read that right.  See ya later DVD’s!  I am no longer offering DVD’s of your images.  I know some of my brides right now are like, wait what?! But you said!!  Don’t you worry! I have something MUCH better for ya :)

I’ve never really like the idea of DVD’s.  I feel like movies, cd’s, games, they all go missing ALL the time.  Or they get scratched and they’re ruined.  Every time I deliver a DVD to a client in my mind I think, “Man I hope they don’t lose it or scratch it”  I do keep wedding images for a while but not forever and I would hate the thought that some day down the road that disc would not work and they would only be able to access their tiny images they posted to facebook.  And Facebook just ruins photos and resizes them and they’d never be able to print them.  That might just sound crazy, I don’t know.  But I have a fun new solution!

The rad crew at Showit (the awesome folks who host my website and make my life somewhat easier) have build this awesome software that I can upload your images to and “pass” them to you to view, download, pick your favorites, post to facebook, etc. And even better your images are hosted with the cloud technology for a year for you to view. You can access your images on ANY device that you can get the internet. So you’re chillin in the airport talking with some great people on your way home from your honeymoon about how awesome your wedding was and all ya gotta do is pull out your phone, or ipod, or ipad and without having to save them to that device you can pull them up and share.  Now you can download them and save them to any device that you have so no worries there. And when you share the images on Facebook your friends and fam can see them at full-resolution rather than Facebooks terrible way of resizing them and ruining the quality of the image.  IT’S SO AWESOME!

Okay you may not have even caught all of that as I rambled off in excitement.  I promise you it’s killer and it’s so easy! A few weeks ago I did Christina & Shawn’s engagement photos and used them as my “guinea pigs” for PASS.  Well they loved and said it was so easy to access their images and download and that couldn’t make me any happier!  So for them I put together real quick this +site to share with their friends and fam to see all of their images :) Check it out!!! You can view the images full screen, pick your favs, share them to facebook, download them. Who needs DVD’s?

CLICK HERE TO CHECK OUT A PASS SITE :)

And no blog post is complete without a photo so I’ll give you a little sneak-a-peek at the next post….. CALIFOOOORRRNNNIIIAAAAAAAAAAAA

In Memory of Officer Kilcullen

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

There are some things in life that just hit you like a freight train.  I live in a town, much like Eugene, Oregon.  We’re a small town but we have a big community.  Everything that happens in this town, we go through it together.  I have a brother who is a city cop.  Everytime he’s called out on SWAT your heart sinks just a little and you say a quick prayer.  Officers sacrifice their lives day-in and day-out.  I have so much respect for them, they do something I couldn’t do.  A few weeks ago a Eugene officer, Officer Chris Kilcullen, was killed in the line of duty.  He left behind a wife and 2 children.  During this time my friends Heather & Eugene from 2Duce2 Films travelled to Oregon to do some video work for many of our other photographer friends.  The day of Officer Kilcullen’s memorial our friend Jeff, from Holli True Photography, planned to go to the memorial and capture some photos to pay tribute to the fallen officer.  Heather & Eugene went along and took video.  There work is so beautiful!  I’m so proud to call these people my friends, and I’m so proud to be apart of an industry that cares about people, and cares about giving back.  There is no greater joy.

To Officer Kilcullen’s family, friends, and community I am so sorry to hear of your loss.  You all are in my prayers.  May the Lord hold you and comfort you in this time of such heartache.

Check out Jeff’s photos here.  And, watch the video below, or on 2Duce2 Films blog.
